Minor and Mabel must have been having marriage problems during this time. Daddy told us kids that his father was drinking heavily and collecting the boys hard earned money before they could get their hands on it. One weekend after working all week in the fields, Lee rushed to get his pay only to find Minor had collected for him and was drunk already.
The Children never expected to spend their earnings on themselves but knew Mother needed it at home.
To tell us how poor the family was, Dad told of going to school each day taking just a bread and butter sandwich for lunch. One boy at school had not only better food but an apple in his lunch each day. The boy would bite into the apple with a loud juicy, "Crunch!"
After awhile, Dad and his brothers decided to go to the home of this "Apple Family" late one night. The boys sneaked into the family's root cellar and stole a box of apples form the ample storage supply.
Knowing their mother would not approve of her boys stealing, Lee and his brothers hid the box of apples out in a secret place, That night was very cold. The whole supply of apples froze. When the boys went to get an apple to crunch into, they found the frozen apples had defrosted into watery pulpy masses.. So much for Stealing!
