Black Babies and Fire Wood

Lee was one of those active boys fun of imagination and fun. His best friend was his sister, Anna, who was two years old the day Lee was born. These two were like twins, What mischief one could not think of, the other one would.

One day Mabel and Miner went into town shopping leaving Lee and Anna in charge of the younger children. The kids had seen their first black man in town a week earlier and were so impressed with what they had seen, they decided to play "dress up black." They opened the wood stove and took out soot with their hands. The soot was rubbed liberally over Bert and Phyllis, as well as themselves. When Mabel walked through the door hours later she took one look and bust into tears. "Oh, my babies!" she cried. the fun was not so fun anymore as Mother cried and scrubbed children at the same time.

Anna said many of their deeds were her ideas, but Lee always go the spankings. One time she and Lee had been sent out side to gather wood for the stove. Anna suggested they throw the wood down the well to hide it. Then there would be no wood for them to have to take into the house and they could get on with their play.  Lee got a thorough trouncing for that  mischief.
